Infection control & prevention has always been one of our office’s top priorities. With the advent of Covid-19 and other severe acute respiratory disorders in recent years, this has become even more important. The Optrel Swiss Air PAPR has provided our office an additional level of safety for myself, my team, and our patients during dental procedures.

Prior to adopting the Optrel Swiss Air PAPR my office had been wearing N95 masks for all aerosol procedures. Not only were they uncomfortable after long periods of time but I found them difficult to wear with dental loupes. Not only was the Swiss Air lightweight and compact but we’ve found the comfort to be far superior. Unlike other PAPR’s I had worn, the Swiss Air is lightweight, compact, and does not interfere with hearing. The filter is small enough to be worn under my whitecoat/PPE and does not interfere with my loupes. The flow of air through the mask is quiet, and the cool air is actually really nice. Additionally, unlike the tightly fitting N95’s I had been wearing I no longer go home with headaches at the end of the day due to my mask.

The PAPR itself is easy to use and clean. The controls located on the chest strap are intuitive and the mask is easy to fit. Patients at our practice have been very receptive and appreciate the extra steps we’ve taken to ensure their safety. I highly, highly recommend the Swiss Air PAPR!

I just can’t say how much I love this system. I’m not a welder. I bought the to finish up the pandemic and for the use of my allergies. I have worn the system into stores and to work. I work in a hotel and I’ve had so many guest compliment me on this and asked me about it. I wore the optrel swiss air for 12 hours straight on a shift and only taken it off to eat or dink. It’s comfortable to wear for long periods. Best part no more headaches or mask acne I just wish this was out before the pandemic.

  3. Isaias

    Love this papr , all
I can say is if you can save some extra on the side or if you can afford the product is the best investment for your health in this pandemic. Light and comfortable.

Are other filters available…for example to protect against organic vapors and Isocyanates?

2 years 8 months ago

We currently only offer the HEPA filter for the Swiss Air.

Bob

Are there any plans on offering filters for vapors and gases in the future?

Is the Swiss air water resistant such as against rain storm? If not, does it hold up in high humidity environments (e.g. higher than 65% RH)?

2 years 8 months ago

You do not want to wear the Swiss Air in the rain due to the paper filters. They will lose their effectiveness in blocking contaminants. The Swiss Air has both temperature and humidity sensors in the control unit to help maintain steady air flow with temperature and humidity fluctuation. So humidity over 65% will not be a problem for the Swiss Air.

Is the mask machine washable? Or do you have to wash by hand?

2 years 8 months ago

You can machine wash the mask but we do recommend hang drying.

How long is the average life of the filter?

2 years 7 months ago

We are asked this question a lot. The life of the filter depends on a couple of factors. The environment which it is being used has the largest impact on filter life. Fan speed also as a slight impact. Unfortunately without a lot more detail we cannot make an accurate claim to what kind of filter life you can expect.

Will this work with a beard? In other words, is the positive pressure sufficient (or do you have a recommended setting) to ensure no air is drawn around the sides of the mask.

2 years 7 months ago

The Swiss Air will work with a beard because of the positive pressure. The face mask has a foam insert that can be cut to fit by the user and an adjustable draw string under the chin to really dial in the fit. With a long or thick beard we would suggest running the blower at a bit stronger fan speed than without any facial hair.

Which backpack or duffle bag will this fit in along with a helmet?

2 years 7 months ago

The Swiss Air comes with a backpack that will hold the Swiss Air. If you want something to hold both your hood and a Swiss Air you would need a duffel bag. Part number 6000.002.

How does this not need a fit-test?

2 years 6 months ago

The Swiss Air works on positive pressure. The pressure inside the mask is greater than the air pressure outside the masks preventing contaminants from entering.

Is this NIOSH approved?

2 years 6 months ago

NIOSH does not currently have testing protocol for this type of product preventing NIOSH approval. The Swiss Air has obtained all major certifications from around the world but until NIOSH creates a category for this type of innovation they will not even test it.

One of our welders has this unit and he likes it very much, however, he got the remote cable hung up and bent the wire near the connector and it is a bit spotty now. some protection from getting snagged would be a good idea. Now I am looking for replacement parts, is there a full breakdown of parts available hidden somewhere(more likely right in front of my nose)?

2 years 2 months ago

Hi Jason – if you navigate to the Swiss Air Page: https://optrel.us/product/swiss-air-papr/ and scroll down past the Swiss Air videos, you’ll see Accessories & Replacement Parts. I hope this helps!

Good day! Tell me to what negative temperatures can you use the mask?

2 years 2 months ago

The Swiss Air has an operating temperature range of 23° F to 105° F or -5° C to 40 °C.

Why does it have Bluetooth

2 years 2 months ago

The Swiss Air has built in Bluetooth that in the future will allow the user to control the unit from their phone and update the software via Bluetooth. We do not currently have a release date for these functions.

Can I use my regular prescription safety glasses with it?

2 years 1 month ago

You can wear any type of glasses with the Swiss Air.

Would this mask provide appropriate protection for working with spray paint?

2 years 4 days ago

We currently only offer a HEPA filter for the Swiss Air. For spray paint you would need an O/V filter which we currently do not offer with this unit.

Are there any plans to make a waterproof version? It rains often where I work, outdoors in the PNW.

1 year 6 months ago

We are working on a “rain coat” for the Swiss Air. Creating a waterproof version would be impossible with the need for air flow thru a filter. A rain coat would give you the protection you need for the rain you mention. This should be available in early 2023.

What is the positive pressure delivered during inspiration and expiration using the unit cmH₂O, where 1 cmH₂O
= 0.980665 mbar or hPa
≈ 0.000967838 atm
≈ 0.0142233433071196 psi?

Grant Cooper
1 year 3 months ago

The respirators do not deliver positive pressure. The user is breathing and has to work against the resistance of the filter. The maximal resistance is regulated by NIOSH and must be below 25 mm of H2O. This corresponds to 2.5 cmH2O. The p.air and p.air clear have a much lower resistance than demanded by NIOSH. The pressure measured depends on the air flow rate. NIOSH test at 85 liter per minute. The test protocol of NIOSH can be found here (for inhalation and exhalation)

Can you charge the battery while leaving it in the pack?

Grant Cooper
11 months 16 days ago

Yes, you can charge the Swiss Air battery while it is installed in the unit.

2 years 8 months ago

A gas filter is currently in development but we do not anticipate it being available until 2022 due to the lengthy certification process.
